STEAM Program

STEAM Week from November 4th to 8th

Kindergarten to 2nd grade:

  • Challenge: build an insect hotel
  • STEAM Focus: Science (ecology, habitats), Engineering, Art
  • Activity: Teams learn about the importance of insects and create a "hotel" to attract beneficial insects to a garden.
  • Materials we need: Recycled materials (cardboard tubes, plastic bottles, scrap wood), natural materials (leaves, twigs, pine cones).

Third to Fifth Grade

  • Challenge: Create a chain reaction machine
  • STEAM Focus: Engineering (simple machines, cause and effect), Physics (motion, energy transfer)
  • Activity: Teams build a chain reaction machine using everyday objects where one action triggers the next in a sequence.
  • Materials we need: aluminum foil, cardboard, water bottles, toilet paper or paper towel tubes.

Makerspace

In our Makerspace, kindergarten through second grade have been utilizing hands on learning to learn science, engineering, and reading.

Student building with shapes

OSMO

Students build characters out of shapes, learning spatial reasoning and geometric terms.

Student builing name out of legos

Laity

Students build their names out of legos. This teaches them following visual directions, time management, and engineering.

Students learning with Magnatiles

Magnatiles

Students explore physics by learning about potential and kinetic energy.

STEAM Lab

In our STEAM Lab, third through fifth grades have been using desktop computers, laptops, iPads, and card games to explore digital citizenship and increase math skills.

Student playing Kind Kingdom on a computer

Kind Kingdom

Students learn how to deal with bullies online through a video game. Bullies either get blocked or reported and students spread kindness to those the bullies hurt.

Student playing Minecraft on a computer

Minecraft

Students are building a house
in Minecraft. This teaches them spatial reasoning, time management, and construction.

Student playing TileFarm on an iPad

TileFarm

Students have been working on math skills like greater than, less than, equal, and counting
quickly.

What Comes Next?

Kindergarten through second grade will move to the STEAM lab. They will learn how to log on to desktop and laptop computers, digital citizenship, math, and literacy.

Third through fifth grades will move into the makerspace. Our theme will be Outer Space and Our Universe. They will learn about constellations, engineering, and physics through hands-on learning.

A straw rocket

Engineer a Rocket

3-5 will be building self
propelled rocket out of
every day items.

An OSMO drawing pad and pens

OSMO Monster

K-2 will be learning literacy through an interactive digital resource.

A constellation

Constellation Explorer

3-5 will be learning about constellations and will map out their own star groups.
